Organically farmed Grenache fermented whole cluster. The fruit comes primarily from two vineyards that encapsulate the heart of the Los Olivos District AVA. The vineyards are decidedly quite different yet still, in my mind, are perfect representations of the soils and climate of the place I call home. Ancient alluvial terrace material make up the soils of both sites. Ballard Adobes Vineyard sits atop the ancient river Alamo Pintado which used to flow south into the coalescence zone, which is exactly the location of the second vineyard of this blend; Sierra Grande Vineyard. This ancient river and the adjacent Santa Agueda River are what is responsible for the alluvial fan that define the Los Olivos District -- Santa Barbara's only AVA that has a consistent soil type.
The soils are consistent between these two vineyards but the microclimate differs greatly. Ballard Adobes is usually picked 2 weeks earlier than Sierra Grande and exhibits much more red fruit on the nose. Sierra Grande is cooler, down by the riverbed, and carries more spice and structure.
